Bright Lights Shine on Eight

John Bielenberg. Stefan Sagmeister. Lucille Tenazas. Wolfgang Weingart. Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones. William Drenttel and Jessica Helfand. This spring, AIGA will recognize these eight giants with the coveted AIGA Medal, awarded for exceptional achievements, services or other contributions to the field of design and visual communication. The presentations will be made on April 19 in New York at “Bright Lights” a celebration that benefits the AIGA Design Archives, a public online collection of excellence in design, and Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships for underprivileged design and art students. Chaired by DJ Stout, partner at Pentagram, “Bright Lights” perennially brings together hundreds of design enthusiasts and professionals to celebrate design excellence.

John C Jay is leaving his current post as Global Coexecutive Creative Director at Weiden + Kennedy to heading a new joint venture. He calls W+K Garage “a strategic and entrepreneurial shop that will concept, create and invest in innovative products, experiences, content and technology that will help to redefine the idea of what a modern, global brand is … Simply, I want to make things. Not to make meetings, but make in new ways. Make new products, digital and analog. I want to make new businesses. I want to make new experiences – interactive or physical, in business and in culture.” At an all-agency meeting, Jay described the intersection of technology, culture, arts, science and business in our everyday lives, and noted the importance of being able to think, communicate and act globally. Adds Wieden+ Kennedy co-founder Dan Wieden: “John is Garage. If you're a client and want a personal relationship with someone, not some cast of characters to play with your cast of characters, this is where to go. It's an elevated proposition. That's why it's so intriguing. He's extraordinarily connected at the top levels of the industry, so I think you'll see a lot of magical things when you don't have to work through agency or client bureaucracy … ” Jay joined W+K in 1993, and rose to Partner and Global Coexecutive Creative Director at the agency.

AIGA names Yang Kim, Executive Creative Director for Peopledesign, as Chair of the 2013 National Board Nominating Committee. The nominating process identifies, encourages, and enlists creative professionals in the service of AIGA at a leadership level. As chair, Kim and the committee members are responsible for selecting and nominating the board slate, considering the roles and contributions of departing board members, and making sure the makeup of the board addresses the current needs of the organization. Comments AIGA Executive Director Ric Grefé: “We feel that Yang Kim’s knowledge of the design profession as well as her extensive involvement with AIGA make her an ideal candidate for this role.” Peopledesign, based in Grand Rapids MI, is focused on building brand innovation platforms. Kim recently joined colleagues Kevin Budelmann and Curt Wozniak in writing Brand Identity Essentials, published by Rockport.

Now one of the largest independent agencies in the nation, Chicago-based Trisect expands its creative leadership team. Chief Creative Officer Paul Kuzma moves to the new post of Chief Idea Officer, and Executive Creative Director Chris Cancilla has been appointed Chief Creative Officer. As CCO, Kuzma directed the growth of Trisect from a fledgling Chicago boutique into a 140 person team; he is focusing on brand invention and marketing innovation. Cancilla assumes leadership of a Trisect creative team that has grown to 45. In his short tenure at the agency, Cancilla has developed several of the agency’s signature campaigns. He joined Trisect in 2011, following award-winning stints at top Chicago shops including Arc and Y&R. Trisect recently moved to a state-of-the-art loft space in Chicago’s West Loop and opened an office in LA.

An expert in “dematerialization design,” Cameron Tonkinwise is now a full-time faculty member of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design as Associate Professor, Director of Design Studies and Chair of the Doctoral Studies Committee. Formerly head of design thinking and sustainability for the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design, Tonkinwise was responsible for developing offerings in the areas of strategy, sustainability and service design. He also co-chaired the Tishman Environment Design Center, managing the New School’s university-wide degree programs in environmental studies. “Dematerialization design” attempts to improve societal sustainability by lowering its materials intensity.


SEGD, the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, names Clive Roux as its CEO. Roux is an industrial designer and former CEO of the Industrial Designers Society of America. He also spent 15 years leading creative units for Philips Design, the product design arm of Royal Philips Electronics. Roux predicts the role of visual communications in the built environment will increase as technology changes. He says: “Environmental graphic designers are uniquely qualified to help thoughtfully integrate technology into the ‘real world.’”

Jim Adorney recently became Vice President, Creative Director at Phillips Design Group in Boston. His career has included senior level positions at Landor, BrandEquity and Catapult Thinking where he has specialized in brand identity strategy and the development of global packaging and merchandising systems for the likes of A&W, Atari, Au Bon Pain, Bacardi, Campbell’s, Crest, CVS, Lifesavers, Mevacor, Polaroid, RSA, Staples, Takeda and V8. Adorney attended DePauw University, and did graduate studies at Pratt, NC State, and the Florence Academy of Art.
