Allan Peters is a Senior Art Director at Target's in house studio in Minneapolis. After graduating from The College of Visual Arts with a degree in Communication Design, he worked for three small graphic design shops where he honed his design style and sensibility. Next he shifted his career and took a job as an Art Director at BBDO the most award winning ad agency in the world. At BBDO, he learned the art of advertising. At Target he rebranded Target's home brand in the largest rebrand in the company’s 50 year history as well as a rebrand of Target's core brand imagery. His work has been recognized by AIGA, Effie, AdFed and major design publications. As a hobby, Peters authors the most influential design blog in the Midwest (allanpeters.com/blog) with over 50,000 page views a month. Peters has “a beautiful wife, two boys and is a devout Christian.”
Where were you born and where do you live now? How does that affect your design sensibility?
I was born in South Minneapolis, and I still live in South Minneapolis. The Midwest has had a strong impact on my design esthetic. Being at the heart of America, there is so much to be inspired by like small town antique stores, a thriving art scene and a community that thrives on it's history. Plus, with four months of snow, we're forced to stay inside and hone our skills.
Who would you say is the most influential graphic designer of the past 50 years? How have they influenced your design?
Paul Rand. He had a fearless approach to typography, color and illustration. He was one of the originators of the Swiss Style which focused on simplicity and readability. What made him inspirational to me was the way he could simplify a design down to the core of the idea without losing any personality.
What is your greatest strength and weakness as a designer or design manager?
My greatest strength is that I care too much. I sweat the details so that the work is as strong as possible. My greatest weakness is that I care too much. I can become absorbed in my work and miss out on the important things in life.
