Amy Lukas


Amy Lukas, principal of Infinite Scale and a Society for Environmental Graphic Design board member since 2007, has been named the new SEGD Board President. Prior to starting Infinite Scale, a specialized graphic design studio integrating brand strategy with environmental and event design, Lukas was the design project manager in the award-winning Look of the Games department for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Her projects have included several Super Bowls as well as the NBA and NHL All-Star Games. At the same time, seven new board members were announced by the New York-headquartered association dedicated to communication design in the built environment. The new board members are: Patrick Angelel, CREO Industrial Arts; Sander Baumann, designworkplan; Moira Gemmill, Victoria & Albert Museum; Dan Moalli, Design and Production Inc; Julie Vogel, Kate Keating Associates; Leslie Wolke, Leslie Wolke Consulting; and Joe Zenas, Thinkwell Group. Of the current board, Jessica W. London, CEO of SEGD, says it is the most diverse in the organization’s history, spanning many design disciplines and geographical areas. In addition to Lukas, the Executive Committee now consists of Past President Wayne McCutcheon of Entro Communications; Treasurer Gary Stemler of archetype; Senior Vice President Jill Ayers of Design 360; and Vice President Ed Hofmann of Limited Brands.


Mary Zalla


Mary Zalla is the first female CEO of Landor Associates, the venerable strategic brand consulting and design firms founded by Walter Landor back in 1941. Zalla was previously president of the firm, a role she was promoted into just last summer. She reports to Craig Branigan, CEO of the B to D Group within WPP. While president of the firm, Zalla has worked to develop a new vision, led a global strategic planning process, and continued to lead the Chicago and Cincinnati offices. She will continue to be based out of the Cincinnati office. Her responsibilities are expanding to oversee and build the entire business on a global scale, implement the vision, diversify offerings, and continue to grow key client relationships. Zalla joined Landor in 1998; during the five years she was managing director of the Midwest offices, they provided work for the likes of P&G, Evenflo, GE, Kraft, Motorola, and Nestle.


Michael Aron


Lynda Decker announced that Michael Aron has joined New York's Decker Design as Design Director. Having collaborated together over the past year on select projects, the two decided to join their talent and experience. Aron’s arrival expands the company's creative resources and capacity to work on strategic design initiatives. He has an extensive interactive and communications portfolio, having created solutions for clients including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ameriprise Financial, ImClone, Boston Properties, and Milbank.


Matt Defrain


Grant Design Collaborative has promoted Matt DeFrain to Creative Director. Since joining the firm in 2000, he has provided strategic brand design support for an international roster of clients. “I can think of no other designer that I would have as Grant Design Collaborative’s Creative Director. Matt’s vision, talent and passion for great design are second to none… Matt has demonstrated the leadership and inventive spirit required to consistently provide enduring results through an integrated design approach, and our international client base will benefit from his appointment,” states Bill Grant, President and Chief Creative Officer of Grant Design Collaborative. Among other responsibilities, DeFrain directs and coordinates the firm’s creative team, led by Grant who will continue to oversee client business strategy and creative innovation. DeFrain’s work has been featured in the likes of AIGA 365, CA, Contract, GDUSA, How, Metropolis, and Interior Design. DeFrain received a graphic design degree from Western Michigan University.


John-Paul Doyle


Anthem Worldwide appoints John-Paul Doyle to serve as Senior Creative Director for its New York office. Lor Gold, Global Chief Creative Officer for Schawk, said, “John-Paul brings extensive experience in all consumer brand experience touchpoints in categories ranging from personal care and beauty to prestige luxury brands in the alcohol/spirits space.” Doyle moves from Raison Pure, where, as Creative Director, he managed large strategic projects from concept to execution through to production. Doyle’s background includes experience with Diageo, Unilever, Kraft, Godiva, Burt’s Bees, Johnnie Walker, Dove, and Evian.

Emily Kehe is the new Design Director of Fortune. She jumped into designing covers and layouts, developing the iPad edition, and managing the department, when John Korpics left the Time Inc. title to become creative director for ESPN. Fortune Managing Editor Andy Serwer says that, when it came time to find a permanent replacement for John, “I really needed to look no further than a few doors down to Emily’s office.”
Red Square Agency, a full-service creative agency in Mobile AL, has hired Barrie Bamberg as Head of Production. Bamberg comes to Red Square from one of the most recognizable agencies, Crispin Porter + Bogusky. Bamberg brings with her a portfolio that includes work for the likes of Kraft, MetLife, Vitaminwater, MINI Cooper, Virgin Atlantic, Miller Lite, Old Navy, Volkswagen, Coke Zero and Google. She has won numerous awards including 2005 ATHENA Gold, 2006 Cannes Grand Prix Lion and a 2006 MPA Kelly Award.
The Milwaukee WI branding, design and digital agency, GS Design, added veteran creative talent Peter Bell as Associate Creative Director. Bell, a recipient of countless awards, is responsible for conceiving, creating and producing a wide array of branding projects in collaboration with agency teams. Jeff Prochnow, co-founder of GS Design, made the announcement. Bell has served at a number of Milwaukee and Madison agencies, including BVK, Hiebing Group, Shine Advertising Co., and Planet Propaganda. With more than 20 years in the industry, he has worked with high profile clients, including Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Polaris, Trek, TaylorMade Golf, Couples Resorts, and the History Channel.
Experiential marketing agency MKTG expands its New York office with the hire of David Weinstock as VP of Creative. He oversees creative leadership, art direction, design and strategy for digital, social interaction and design work. He comes from Big Fish Films and Hero Content.
Eisenberg and Associates of Dallas TX, welcomes Renee Blostein as an Art Director. She graduated from the University of North Texas with a major in Communications, has been recognized by the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, and began her career at a family-owned marketing firm where she worked with Fortune 500 clients. In her spare time, she dines on exotic cuisine, cuddles with her cats, and loves live music.
Gordy Hirsch is upped to Creative Director at Amélie, Denver CO. Hirsch has brought to life many of the agency’s most visible campaigns including “Smart Meal” for Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, motorcycle safety awareness for the Colorado Department of Transportation, and the Lockdown creative concept for the Coloradans Against Auto Theft coalition.
Michelle Carbonaro joins Flood Creative, Nyack NY, as Senior Designer. A graduate of SVA, Carbonaro has held creative posts at BUILT NY, Daymon Worldwide Design, and Town & Country Living. Flood clients include Bath & Body Works, Coca-Cola, Kraft, Pepperidge Farm and Unilever.
Little Big Brands of White Plains NY adds industry veteran Crystal Bennett. Bennett, who joins from brand consultancy CBX, is a partner, director of business development, and self-proclaimed “brand fanatic.” She has been in the industry for more than 15 years, including stints at Frankfurt Balkind and Sterling Brands.
Dragon Rouge invites Karen Smith to become Executive Vice President, Strategy and Innovation. It is a new position for the branding and identity firm. Most recently, Smith held the position of VP, Strategy at CBX, working with the likes of PepsiCo, Kimberly-Clark, Del Monte, Georgia-Pacific and Boston Scientific.
