VP, EXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR, PENGUIN BOOKS
I labor under the title of V.P. Executive Creative Director, and oversee the covers and jackets for 12 diverse publishing imprints within Penguin Books. Packaging so many authors allows me and my staff of designers and art directors to work with some of the worlds most talented artists. I have a book out titled PENGUIN 75 (www.penguinbooks75.com/ 75covers.html) that highlights the good and the bad of these collaborations with stories and visuals provided by both author and artist. I've been at Penguin for 23 years, and with my wife Ingsu Liu for the same time, as I met her my first day at work. We live in Park Slope.
Where were you born or grew up, where do you live, does this effect your design style or sensibility?
I was born into a row home neighborhood, North East Philly. My father was the only white collar guy on our block where he kept his 2 seater Austin Healy, even though he had 5 children and that was our only car. Divorce soon followed! I now live in Brooklyn. Both of these areas effect greatly my sensibilities.
If you were not a designer, what would
you be doing for a living?
I was groomed in a way to be an illustrator, and started my career that way. But an unstructured life is quite bad for me, and I grew to enjoy design more than illustration which became a huge relief when I gave it up — so I would still be an illustrator.
What is your greatest strength and
weakness as a designer or design manager?
I am very good at getting others to work at something for as long as it takes to strike visual gold — I am not so successful at making myself do the same.
My father, Gerald Buckley

TideData... otherwise, with my terrible nautical skills, my boat gets stuck in the muck.
