A Culture of Green

Kalico Design

Located in Frederick, MD, just a short distance from Baltimore and Washington DC, Kalico Design is a boutique, home-based graphic design studio. Specializing in print design, the firm works closely with clients to generate fresh and thoughtful solutions for their marketing and design needs. While Kalico has a large variety of clients, from start-ups to national associations, its passion is to work with those in the health/wellness, organic, holistic and women-oriented industries. Business owner Kimberly Dow approaches eco-consciousness as an ongoing learning experience, so naturally this translates to her business model as well. Says Dow: “I’m constantly looking for simple, practical ways for my husband and I to live a greener and healthier lifestyle at home, without drastically changing our routine or way of life. I strive for this same balance in my business.” Kalico has been awarded the Green America’s Business Seal of Approval for its efforts which include: sending project estimates, comps and revisions digitally; when they must print, using scrap paper from the recycling bin and/or printing double-sided; purchasing paper and office supplies made of 100% postconsumer waste; taking advantage of natural light during regular hours, rarely needing to turn on office lights; conducting most meetings via phone or email to decrease the amount of driving for Kalico and clients; utilizing green-certified printers and web hosts; and, lastly, being a home-based business, eliminating the daily commute (unless you count the walk down the hallway).

“The bottom line is this: our sustainable practices are an inherent part of our business model, not what ultimately defines us. We enjoy working with business at every stage of their ‘greening’ process, be it novice, intermediate or advanced (and we enjoy learning along the way as well!)”

A Tasty Nosh is a small start-up offering healthy lunch delivery service to local businesses. Looking to brand the concept, A Tasty Nosh approached Kalico to design a logo, business card and website. The firm established a fun, text-based logo with a bright color palette of greens and purples. Then, to match the recyclable, cardboard boxes in which the lunches are delivered, Kalico selected a business card with a cardboard textured background. All cards were printed on 100% recycled, 60% postconsumer waste processed chlorine free and FSC-certified paper with vegetable-based inks by a carbon neutral, green certified printer. The look is carried over to the client’s website as well. Finally, Kalico helped the client secure logo stickers to affix to lunch boxes, reducing the need for custom printed packaging, and alleviating extra waste by allowing for smaller print runs.
