Students to Watch in 2011
ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY
Born in Shanghai, Jenny Pan grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, drawing, painting and making fun creations from scraps of paper. From an early age, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. The adventure began as she studied visual arts and photography at UC San Diego and returned to the Bay Area to pursue an MFA in Graphic Design at Academy of Art University. Pan has worked as an intern and freelancer at San Francisco’s Weymouth Design, and is currently an intern at Office: Jason Schulte Design where she has worked on projects for the likes of Coca-Cola, Sesame Workshop, eBay, and Williams-Sonoma. Pan hopes to start her own creative studio one day. Meanwhile, she spends free time teaching tricks to her dog Cookie and volunteering on projects for close friends.
What made you decide to go to design school?
It is important to love what you do. Design keeps me inspired and challenged. Design is communication, collaboration, problem solving, ever-changing and powerful. It is everything and everywhere.
Has it been a positive experience?
Definitely. There is never a dull moment. One reason I decided to attend Academy of Art University is that many instructors are working professionals, which gives students an advantage of staying current. There is a large community of designers with a built-in network. It also opens up opportunities for real-world experiences at great firms in the Bay Area. The best part is that you get to meet and work with great people along the way — and have fun doing it, too.
