Senior Creative Director, Yahoo!

Brian Hunt is Yahoo!’s Senior Creative Director in the United States. Responsible for both Yahoo!’s Branded Entertainment division as well as the Yahoo! Creative Solutions team, Hunt truly experiences the dynamic online marketing space from every angle. His team of Strategists, Designers, Program Managers and Developers works with the largest brand advertisers in the world to develop engaging creative, whether in the form of original digital programming or innovative ad executions. Hunt’s work in the online space began over 12 years ago as one of the original employees for web pioneer, DoubleClick, where he served as the company’s Creative Director. After DoubleClick, Hunt functioned as a creative and marketing consultant for CNN Money, Theorem, and L’Oreal among many others. In addition to his day job, Hunt co-founded the independent record label Wondermore Records, and has published several children’s books for Scholastic. He received his undergraduate degree from Hamilton College.

Where were you born, where do you live, did this effect your design style or sensibilities?
I was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, grew up in Fairfield, CT, and have been in New York City for the past 14 years. I’m not sure if Fairfield affected my design sensibilities. I know that as a kid, I was drawn to illustrators and cartoonists (and still am today). There seems to be something suburban about the Sunday comics and comic books and Saturday morning television - but maybe that’s just about being a kid. As for New York City, it can’t help but affect one’s style - and there are so many to choose from here. I like the dark, eerie look - a la Gotham City. Again, back to the comics.

If you were not a designer, what would you do?
Assuming the world is my oyster? I would voice a Muppet.

What advice would you give a design student or young professional just starting out?
Bring more to the table than just great design skills. Understanding communication and marketing are necessary components to being a successful designer today. Don’t be the talented weirdo who can’t hold a conversation and does not have any grasp for the business side of your field. The creatives with the best chances for success offer a palette of traits that extend way beyond their portfolio.
